Social identity refers to the portion of an individual's self-concept that derives from the groups to which they belong and the social categories with which they identify. It encompasses the aspects of identity that are shaped by an individual's membership in various social groups, such as their nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, occupation, or any other group that holds significance to them. Social identity theory, developed by Henri Tajfel and John Turner, suggests that people categorize themselves and others into social groups, which then influences their perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors towards themselves and others. Social identity can play a significant role in shaping individuals' sense of belonging, self-esteem, and intergroup relations.
