      Neurons, also known as nerve cells, are the fundamental building blocks of the nervous system responsible for transmitting and processing information throughout the body. They are specialized cells that play a crucial role in communication within the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. Neurons exhibit unique structural and functional properties that enable them to transmit electrical impulses, or action potentials, across long distances and form complex networks to process information.

      Structure of Neurons:

      Neurons consist of three main parts: the cell body (soma), dendrites, and axon.

      1. Cell Body (Soma): The cell body, or soma, is the main component of the neuron that contains the nucleus and other organelles essential for cellular function. It integrates incoming signals from dendrites and generates electrical impulses that are transmitted along the axon.

      2. Dendrites: Dendrites are branched extensions of the cell body that receive incoming signals from other neurons or sensory receptors. They serve as the input region of the neuron, where chemical signals from neighboring neurons are converted into electrical signals.

      3. Axon: The axon is a long, slender projection that extends from the cell body and carries electrical impulses away from the cell body toward other neurons, muscles, or glands. Axons are specialized for rapid conduction of action potentials and can vary in length from a few millimeters to over a meter in some cases.

      In addition to these main components, neurons may also have specialized structures such as axon terminals, myelin sheath, and synaptic terminals.
