The Telangana movement refers to the socio-political movement for the creation of a separate state of Telangana from the existing state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The demand for Telangana was primarily based on issues related to regional disparities, economic neglect, and concerns about political representation.
The movement gained momentum in the early 2000s, with activists and political leaders advocating for the formation of a separate state to address the perceived marginalization of the Telangana region. The movement witnessed mass protests, strikes, and political agitation. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), led by K. Chandrashekar Rao, played a key role in advocating for the cause. After years of intense agitation and political negotiations, the Indian government, in 2014, announced the formation of the separate state of Telangana, comprising ten districts of the northern region of Andhra Pradesh.
