Measuring Subscapular Skinfold and Chest Circumference: Procedure and Precautions

      Procedure for Measuring Subscapular Skinfold:

      1. Equipment Preparation:

        • Ensure the skinfold calipers are calibrated and in good working condition.
        • Calipers should have a readable scale for accurate measurements.
      2. Subject Preparation:

        • Inform the individual about the procedure to obtain their consent.
        • Ensure the area to be measured (subscapular skinfold) is exposed and easily accessible.
      3. Locating the Subscapular Skinfold Site:

        • Identify the subscapular skinfold site, which is the diagonal fold taken just below the inferior angle of the scapula.
        • Use anatomical landmarks for consistency in measurement placement.
      4. Skinfold Measurement:

        • Pinch the skinfold with the thumb and forefinger, ensuring that only skin and subcutaneous fat are captured.
        • Use the skinfold calipers to measure the thickness of the skinfold, applying steady pressure.
        • Record the measurement to the nearest millimeter.
      5. Repeat for Accuracy:

        • Take at least two measurements on each side, and if there is a significant difference, take additional measurements until consistency is achieved.
        • Calculate the average of the measurements for more accurate results.

      Precautions for Measuring Subscapular Skinfold:

      • Ensure the individual is relaxed and in a standing position with their weight evenly distributed.
      • Avoid measuring over moles, scars, or areas with excessive hair, as these may affect accuracy.
      • Perform measurements on the right side if possible, and if not, ensure consistency in choosing the side.
      • Maintain a consistent pinch site for repeated measurements.

      Procedure for Measuring Chest Circumference:

      1. Equipment Preparation:

        • Use a flexible, non-stretchable measuring tape for chest circumference measurements.
        • Make sure the tape is in good condition and the markings are clearly visible.
      2. Subject Preparation:

        • Instruct the individual to remove upper body clothing, leaving them in a well-fitted undergarment.
        • Ensure the individual is in a relaxed standing position.
      3. Locating the Chest Measurement Site:

        • Identify the nipple line as the reference point for measuring chest circumference.
        • Ensure the tape is parallel to the floor and wraps around the chest at the nipple line.
      4. Taking the Chest Circumference Measurement:

        • Wrap the measuring tape around the chest, ensuring it is snug but not tight.
        • Maintain an even tension around the chest, ensuring the tape is parallel to the floor.
        • Record the measurement to the nearest centimeter.
      5. Repeat for Accuracy:

        • Take at least two measurements to ensure consistency.
        • If there is a significant difference between measurements, take additional readings and calculate the average.

      Precautions for Measuring Chest Circumference:

      • Ensure the individual is not holding their breath during the measurement to prevent artificially increased chest circumference.
      • Place the measuring tape snugly but not too tight to avoid compressing the chest tissues.
      • Perform measurements consistently at the nipple line for accurate comparisons over time.

By following these precise procedures and precautions, accurate measurements of subscapular skinfold and chest circumference can be obtained. Consistency and attention to detail are crucial for reliable anthropometric data, aiding in health assessments and the monitoring of changes over time.
