      Select Test Statistic: Based on the research question and data characteristics, choose an appropriate test statistic to assess the evidence against the null hypothesis. The choice of test statistic depends on factors such as sample size, data distribution, and research design.

      Calculate Test Statistic: Compute the test statistic using the observed data and relevant formula or statistical software. The test statistic quantifies the difference between the sample data and the null hypothesis, providing a basis for decision-making.

      Determine Critical Region: Define the critical region or rejection region based on the chosen significance level and the distribution of the test statistic. This region represents the values of the test statistic that would lead to the rejection of the null hypothesis.

      Make Decision: Compare the calculated test statistic to the critical value or p-value associated with the chosen significance level. If the test statistic falls within the critical region or the p-value is less than α, reject the null hypothesis; otherwise, fail to reject the null hypothesis.

      Interpret Results: Interpret the findings in the context of the research question and hypotheses. Conclude whether there is sufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis or if the results are inconclusive.

      3. Errors in Hypothesis Testing

      Type I Error (False Positive): A Type I error occurs when the null hypothesis is incorrectly rejected, indicating the presence of an effect or difference when none actually exists. This error is associated with choosing a significance level (α) that is too liberal, leading to an increased risk of false positives.

      Type II Error (False Negative): A Type II error occurs when the null hypothesis is incorrectly retained, failing to detect a true effect or difference. This error is influenced by factors such as sample size, effect size, and variability, and it is associated with choosing a significance level (α) that is too conservative.

      Power of the Test: The power of a statistical test is the probability of correctly rejecting the null hypothesis when it is false (1 – β). High power indicates a greater ability to detect true effects or differences, while low power increases the risk of Type II errors.

      Sample Size and Effect Size: Sample size and effect size influence the accuracy of hypothesis testing. Larger sample sizes increase the likelihood of detecting true effects, while larger effect sizes are easier to detect with smaller samples.

      Hypothesis testing is a valuable tool for making evidence-based decisions in research and data analysis. By following the steps outlined in this process, researchers can evaluate hypotheses and draw valid conclusions from sample data.
