Repression:
Repression is a psychological defense mechanism proposed by Freud, involving the unconscious blocking or exclusion of distressing thoughts, memories, or impulses from conscious awareness. It acts as a protective mechanism to prevent anxiety or emotional discomfort associated with threatening or unacceptable thoughts. Repressed content remains in the unconscious, potentially influencing behavior or causing psychological symptoms. While providing temporary relief, understanding and addressing repressed material is crucial in psychoanalytic therapy to promote emotional well-being and personal growth.
