Consumers International (CI) is a global federation of consumer rights organizations that advocates for consumer protection, empowerment, and welfare worldwide. It traces its origins to a conference held in 1960 in London, where representatives from consumer organizations in several countries came together to address common concerns and challenges facing consumers.
The conference, known as the International Organisation of Consumers Unions (IOCU), marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to promote consumer interests on an international scale. The founding members recognized the need for a unified voice to address issues such as product safety, fair trade practices, and access to essential services.
In 1960, the IOCU officially formed, with the mission of coordinating consumer advocacy efforts, sharing information and resources, and influencing policy and regulatory frameworks at the international level. Over the years, the organization expanded its membership and scope of activities, evolving into Consumers International (CI) in 1985.
Consumers International serves as a platform for consumer organizations from around the world to collaborate, exchange best practices, and amplify their collective voice on issues of mutual concern. The organization advocates for consumer rights, promotes sustainable consumption, and campaigns for policies that prioritize consumer welfare.
Today, Consumers International represents over 200 member organizations in more than 100 countries, making it the world's largest consumer rights network. It continues to champion the interests of consumers globally, working towards a fairer, safer, and more sustainable marketplace for all.
