Visual acuity refers to the sharpness of vision, measuring an individual's ability to discern fine details at a specific distance. It is commonly assessed using an eye chart, with the results expressed as a fraction (e.g., 20/20). A person with 20/20 vision can see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at the same distance. Visual acuity is crucial for tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Impaired visual acuity, often corrected with glasses or contact lenses, can result from refractive errors or eye conditions affecting the clarity of the image formed on the retina.
