Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is a legal mechanism that allows individuals or organizations to initiate litigation in courts on behalf of the public interest or for the benefit of marginalized or disadvantaged groups. PIL enables citizens to seek judicial intervention to address systemic issues, enforce fundamental rights, and promote social justice, even in the absence of direct personal interest.
Introduced in India by the judiciary in the 1980s, PIL has become a powerful tool for advancing public welfare and holding governments and other public authorities accountable. PIL petitions can cover a wide range of issues, including environmental protection, human rights violations, corruption, public health, and administrative transparency.
PIL has played a significant role in promoting judicial activism and expanding the scope of constitutional rights and social justice in India. By enabling access to justice for marginalized communities and empowering citizens to challenge arbitrary actions or policies, PIL contributes to the enhancement of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance.
