Secularization refers to the process by which religious influences, practices, and institutions lose their significance and influence in society, resulting in the marginalization of religion from public life and the increasing prominence of secular values, institutions, and worldviews.
Secularization is often associated with the rise of modernity, scientific rationalism, and the decline of traditional religious authority. As societies undergo industrialization, urbanization, and globalization, individuals and communities may prioritize secular concerns such as economic prosperity, political freedom, and social justice over religious doctrines and rituals.
Secularization entails the separation of religion from various spheres of public life, including politics, education, and law, as well as the privatization of religious beliefs and practices. It may also involve a decline in religious participation, the erosion of religious identities, and the rise of secular ideologies and lifestyles.
While secularization has been celebrated as a hallmark of progress and modernity, it also raises concerns about the loss of spiritual values, moral guidance, and communal solidarity in society. Critics argue that secularization can lead to moral relativism, social disintegration, and existential alienation, highlighting the ongoing tension between religious and secular worldviews in contemporary society.
