A meta-narrative refers to a grand or overarching narrative that seeks to explain the meaning, purpose, or trajectory of human history, society, or existence. Coined by French philosopher Jean-Franรงois Lyotard in the late 20th century, the term "meta-narrative" critiques the tendency of certain ideologies or belief systems to impose a single, all-encompassing narrative framework onto diverse human experiences.
Meta-narratives often present a unified and totalizing vision of reality, claiming to offer objective truths or universal principles that govern human life and society. Examples of meta-narratives include religious doctrines, political ideologies, scientific paradigms, and philosophical systems that provide comprehensive explanations for the nature of reality, human existence, and the direction of history.
Critics of meta-narratives argue that they tend to suppress diversity, marginalize alternative perspectives, and perpetuate power imbalances within society. By privileging certain interpretations or narratives over others, meta-narratives can restrict individual freedom, stifle creativity, and inhibit critical thinking.
In contemporary discourse, the term "meta-narrative" is often used to challenge dominant or hegemonic narratives and to advocate for plurality, diversity, and multiplicity of voices. By acknowledging the existence of multiple and conflicting narratives, scholars and activists seek to promote inclusivity, dialogue, and openness to alternative ways of understanding and interpreting the world.
